This title seems to be contradictory. Is it changing all the differences and adaptability of doing things? Where is the consistency?
I am currently helping a group of people, and we are discussing the importance of trust in building teams and creating the work culture they want. Through in-depth discussions, they finally boiled the key, believing they are consistent and taking the time.
At that meeting, it once again made me feel the basis of cultural change, in fact, any change, consistency.
What is consistency? Consistency is some sort of repeatability of behavior, so one can predict how you respond in any given situation and clearly understand how they work. If culture depends to a large extent on how people expect to behave, then consistent leadership is key.
So how does it work?
I remember walking through a seminar with a leader who has been lamenting the importance of repeating safety, holding regular security meetings, conducting security reviews, etc. - all security best practices - they still have not changed culture. "For example," he said, looking at the person over there, he didn't even wear gloves. "At the time I was confused and asked him -" His response was very good? "His answer is very clear." When we can't even do great things, why worry about these little things! "What the manager missed was an important fact.
The reality is that our culture is just a fusion of many small moments. Occasionally, a major event, such as a natural disaster, has dramatically changed the way people operate, but this situation is not enduring, but rather an important little thing every day.
Is this manager wrong? In fact, in my experience, most managers recognize the importance of small things and the importance of being consistent every time.

This video is a good example of the importance of consistency [it is also a good example of creating motion]. In this episode, when you first saw it, a lonely nut danced on the hill and felt like age. In fact it is only 3 minutes and 6 seconds. During this time, he joined with another person before the entire crowd ran down the hill to join them. What happens if this lonely nut stops to rest and grabs a glass of water? No! People will think that he is inconsistent, they would not be attracted to him, and no one would want to join him, because they would have feared that he would stop and they would be alone.
Consistency is the key to cultural change.
The complexity of the leader is like this - every decision, every interaction with someone is a real moment. When I lead the leadership and work with the leadership team and how to change their culture, the cultures that often overwhelm them are not just human resources projects, but everything they do every day. For each budget decision, they choose to have or do not have a performance discussion for each of them, they choose to ignore every behavior, each time they do or not do their own conversation.
All in all, one of the key words that my leaders who work with me use again and again is - as a leader, you get what you do, and you get what you are tolerating.
