I have the chance to hear Joseph' Josh' Stulberg speak at the mediation conference, and I am also speaking this spring. I bought Joseph B. Stulberg and Lela P. Love's "Intermediate Voice: Successful Mediation of Conflict" at the conference. Now, after reading it, I am very happy that I did it. This is a very good book on the basic mediation process and the skills needed to mediate conflicts and find solutions. This book applies to people in professional or community dispute centers, as well as those who need to mediate conflicts in a work, family, or community environment.
The previous chapters introduced some basic knowledge related to conflicts, such as who can use mediation techniques, intervention models, and conflict patterns. Chapter 4 details the mediator and the content involved.
Next is the chapter that actually lets the reader know about the mediation process. Chapter 5 looks at what mediators should do before mediation begins. This chapter will discuss the parties, resources, issues, process options, behavior rules, time frames, and results associated with even setting the mediation session date.
The second part of the book, starting with Chapter 6, introduces the author's BADGER. This is the model they use to describe the role of the mediator in this process. The six components are: start the discussion, accumulate information, develop discussion strategies, generate campaigns, and choose individual sessions and coverage. Each of these components is well described in a separate chapter, and there are a number of examples to help the reader understand and to help the mediator practice these forms of mediation.
The third part of the book focuses on lessons learned, including a chapter on practical challenges and ethical dilemmas and short conclusions. The book also contains some recommended reading and mediator behavior model standards.
I really like this book. It's not some of my mediation text, but I found it easy to read and useful. This is a good thing for those who want to learn the mediation process and become a better mediator. I like to see the lessons in the experience section of this book are a bit long and deeper, but the questions and answers are good suggestions, let you think about the important aspects of mediation, you can face when trying to become the middle voice of conflict.
It's a concise mediation guide that covers the basics, but when I teach my students, the basics are the most important mastery skills because they are everything else built on them. Obviously, for the new mediator, this book gets more than the experienced mediator, but I still think it would be useful for us experienced people to read the basic text. I think this is a good resource for some mediation teaching that I have done.
I don't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand the mediation process and improve mediation skills.
