DIY recycled wood furniture: tray to coffee table

what do you need:

  • 1 recycled wood transport tray
  • 1 box of 2" tacks
  • 200 grain sandpaper
  • Hammer
  • Hand saw
  • Tape measure
  • Paint or stain
  • Pliers

Where can I find the material for this project:

In addition to the pallets, all the materials needed for the project can be found in the local hardware or household goods store. Finding shipping pallets is not very difficult. These items are received for every shipment received by most stores. Call any local store and just ask if they have a shipping tray they need to get rid of. You can help them by cleaning up some space and you can get free material for this DIY project.

Build a solid oak coffee table:

  1. Find which side of the tray has the best look; this side will act as your desktop. Many pallets are marked with a company logo or simply scrapped during shipping. If you want to stain your tray, be aware of unnecessary logos or scratches.

  2. Remove the bottom of the tray and use the claw end of the hammer to remove all slats and beams, leaving only the center slats to maintain support.

  3. Turn the tray upside down.

  4. Fill each gap between the connecting strips with the removed strips. The gap between the trays is the same as the slats to save wood.

  5. Use 2" nails and hammers to nail the slats to the outer frame of the tray.

  6. Take two previously removed beams and measure their distance from the center with a tape measure.

  7. Cut the beam into two halves.

  8. Turn the tray upside down.

  9. A manual clip is used to securely connect a portion of the four cutting beams to the inner corner of the tray frame. Secure this piece firmly to the frame of the tray. This will be one of the four legs.

  10. Repeat step 9 for each corner of the tray.

  11. Measure the width of the outer edge of each leg.

  12. Cut two of the left side slats, the exact length of the action taken in step 11.

  13. Each slat is nailed to the back of the coffee table leg to increase the support.

Now that the coffee table is fully built, you can add any personal finishing touches. The surface of the coffee table was polished using 200 grit sandpaper. This will eliminate any cracking and leave a smooth surface for painting or dyeing. Use a few coats of paint or stain of your choice to suit your taste. Let the coffee table dry overnight.

After the table is dry, put the coffee table inside to show your craft! Saving hundreds of dollars and enjoying unique furniture at home will definitely be the beginning of the conversation.
