The competition, embarrassment and other unpleasant problems of brothers and sisters may have a negative impact on the most powerful families. When you increase the presence of a family business, the bet will be higher because of dysfunction and unhappiness. What I can't emphasize is that if the family itself is not healthy, then this will be re-examined ten times in the family business.
Typical areas of conflict can be divided into two categories: superficial [or content issues] and underlying [or process problems]. This is what I mean:
Surface problem
- Respect the border
- Power struggle
- Hidden agenda
- Compensation
- Enter and promote
- Succession
- Ownership
- Communication
Fundamental problem
- Feel disrespect, patronize or not take seriously
- Need love and recognition
- lack of trust
- Hemiplegia
- Lack of fairness
This requires a lot of digestion and it is not easy to solve all problems at once. However, for the long-term future of any family business, these issues need to be discussed before it is too late, and the damage to the business, the family or both has been completed.
Parents often cause problems accidentally because they make assumptions and decisions based on guilt rather than good business sense. For example, it is common to see an older sibling being given a responsibility status simply because of the birth order - when a young sibling may be better suited to that particular role.
Here are some suggestions to help solve the above problems and put things in the kitchen table and boardroom:
- Focus on transparency - Make sure everyone knows how to make decisions about promotions, salaries, new hires, etc.
- Don't make assumptions - measure brothers and sisters' skills and desires to play an active role
- Proactively identify the skills required for all roles and find space for everyone who fits their strengths
- Implement checks and balances - ensuring that a brother does not have the ability to become a dictator
- Setting standards - ensuring that everyone is judged by the same criteria
- Encourage honest communication - immediately put out the fire, because the brewing resentment will be extremely boiling
You may also find identifying values helpful to make sure everyone is on the same page. Moreover, if you think you need some objective advice, then forming an advisory committee can be very beneficial.
While feeling and thinking like a family, running like a business can be challenging - but it can certainly be done in thousands of successful family businesses across the country.
