Preliminary test results from a case in Utah show that garage doors can provide energy savings for solar homes.
These findings are related to garage doors. Martin Door Manufacturing contributed to a solar home project in Holladay, Utah, in March. Ned Hart, Director of Marketing at TerraSun Energy, provided preliminary test data on home conversions and said the data shows that the new door is working.
The survey results include the following details and data:
- The new bottle opener greatly reduces the amount of electricity used. The homeowner found that the old garage door opener was much more energy intensive than the new opener. According to Hart, operating the opener requires approximately 40 watts of power. He said that the old bottle opener used about 440 watts to open or close the door. This family has about 600 garage doors per month, so Hart estimates the basic energy savings, the new one.
"This is a significant amount of energy saved each month, reducing energy consumption from 4,500 watts to 435 watts per month, or 48,000 watts per year.
- The new opener also promoted the use of CFL or LED bulbs, but the old opener did not. According to energy officials, energy use has been reduced from 120 watts to 3 watts.
- Double glazing used in insulation saves a lot of energy in the garage. Hart said that the increased insulation factor on the door made the garage temperature significantly different, which affected the temperature of the house itself. As part of the solar energy conversion, workers applied a layer of Temp-Coat, an insulating varnish, to the garage wall near the house.
Continuous testing of data and measurements. Hart was anxious to notice that the thermal image of the house showed that the concrete had more heat than the garage door.
Before the start of the project, only January 2004 household gasoline and electricity costs reached $ 460. The goal of the home is a monthly "0" natural gas and electricity bill. Various measures are being taken to achieve this goal.
For example, during the day, the remaining power generated by the solar panels actually supports the meter. At night, when power is consumed from the fixed telephone, the meter moves forward.
Home updates include insulated Martin garage doors, Martin DC3700e-o opening ceremony; energy efficient heat pumps, biomass boilers, solar electric water heaters, extra insulation, tree management [shading solar panels], new roof tiles, etc.
