I think the best form of monitoring is when you have 24 hours personally watching your home central station. But this is not what everyone wants, nor is it suitable for everyone's lifestyle. Here are some ways you might monitor your security system:

• Local only - this means you have nothing to do with the outside world. If your alert is triggered, it will sound an alert for a pre-specified period of time and then shut down.
• Self-monitoring - You can make system settings to notify you via your smartphone. This allows you to call yourself, get home quickly or contact your neighbors. This is not the fastest way to monitor an alarm system, but depending on your alarm system, it may cost less or not.
• Central Station Monitoring - When you use this type of monitoring, your system is connected to a central station with only one job per day. They respond to signals from the alarm system and dispatch appropriate emergency personnel. This type of monitoring does not require you to do anything. You just need to arm and disarm the alarm system and they will watch everything for you.

You must determine which type of alarm system monitoring is meaningful to your situation, and then you must find an alarm company that is willing to meet your needs. In most cases, this will not be a big company. Smaller security companies in your area may be willing to provide all types of alarm system monitoring, but you must ask and know what is required.

Do your homework before you sign a long-term contract. Security companies sign contracts well, and if they want to execute these contracts, they are likely to win the balance of the contract.
